PREMIER LEAGUE 2013-2014 RESULTS

The Champions League final 16 react to the draw Arsenal v Bayern Munich

Arsenal club secretary David Miles told Sky Sports: "We always seem to get the rough end of the draw but nevertheless we're optimistic. We're looking forward to both games.
"We ran them (Bayern Munich) very close last year and don't forget we only lost on away goals in the end, so we are hopeful we can turn the tide and actually come through this one."
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "They are the leaders in the Premier League and so we have been warned.
"A few months ago we had lost to them in Munich. They are a very tough team.
"We have to take it as it comes. This is not about getting an attractive matchup."

The Champions League final 16 react to the draw Zenit St Petersburg v Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said: "If you reach the knockout stage you cannot expect an easy draw but if you see the other matchups ours is one we can live with, but it is not easy.
"It does not matter at this point that we play the return game in Germany. They are top in their league and it will be hard."

The Champions League final 16 react to the draw Schalke 04 v Real Madrid

Schalke coach Jens Keller said: "This is a fantastic draw, for us as well as for our fans.
"To be able to go up against the most famous club in the world and the likes of Ronaldo, Bale and Casillas is something we are already looking forward to."
Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno told Canal Plus: "It's true that in theory there were stronger rivals in the draw but that's the lottery.
"We have always suffered a lot against German teams and so we have to approach the tie very respectfully and cautiously, prepare well and attend to all the details.
"The return match is at the Bernabeu which in principle is an advantage but we know what can happen in this competition. One bad night in Europe and you are out."

The Champions League final 16 react to the draw :AC Milan v Atletico Madrid

AC Milan director Umberto Gandini told la Gazzetta dello Sport: "It could have been worse for us.
"We're going back to Spain to take on a team which we are not used to, as opposed to Real and Barcelona, who we have faced so many times recently.
"We will face Atletico in two months, so we'll have to see how both teams are then. Atletico are very good, are having a great season and will be very tricky opponents."
Atletico Madrid director Clemente Villaverde said to Canal Plus: "We are not talking about just anyone here but a great team with a very significant history that will make them a force in any competition they are part of.
"We obviously have a lot of respect for all the teams but we do not fear anyone.
"We also have our potential and our weapons and we will try to exploit them against any opponent."

The Champions League final 16 react to the draw : Manchester City v Barcelona

Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain told Sky Sports: "It's very tough, but we are happy because we are here and we will fight for the trophy.
"It's a wonderful draw and these are two big teams so it's going to be great, great matches.
"The last game we played in Munich, winning against the champions of Europe [Bayern] and that has given us a lot of confidence. We have shown we can score in all matches."
Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said to Canal Plus: "It's a tie of exceptional quality to get the competition going again in February.
"They are two teams that attack very well and have a huge amount of talent right from the goalkeepers through to the forward line.
"It seems like it will be a match with everything and it is going to be a tough fight."

UEFA Champions League Leverkusen, Olympiacos secure berths

Bayer Leverkusen secured their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League from Group A thanks to a 1-0 win away to Real Sociedad, while Shakhtar Donetsk lost 1-0 at Manchester United.
Sami Hyppia's men went into the game knowing they needed to better the Ukrainian champions' result and they deservedly went ahead four minutes into the second half when defender Omer Toprak slammed home from close range.
Leverkusen should have added to their advantage as Stefan Kiessling hit the post and was also denied by a fine save from Enaut Zubikarai.
And the Bundesliga side were nearly made to pay for their profligacy as Antoine Griezmann forced Bernd Leno into an important save with a low header 17 minutes from time.
United's victory means they top the group, while Leverkusen are likely to face a tricky tie against another group winner when the draw for the last 16 is made in Nyon, Switzerland on 16 December.
Real Madrid put the seal on a fine Champions League group stage campaign as they won 2-0 at FC Copenhagen - even if Cristiano Ronaldo did miss a penalty in the process.
Carlo Ancelotti's men have topped Group B by some distance and finish with 16 points from 18 after a record-breaking night.
Luka Modric's fine opener was the 31st European game in which they have scored, setting a new competition record, before Ronaldo made it safe after the break.
The Ballon d'Or nominee had a chance to make it two late on from the spot but those in the Danish capital were stunned as the normally-faultless frontman's effort was saved.
The loss, although expected, leaves Copenhagen out of both the Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
Heavy snowfall in Istanbul forced the abandonment of the Galatasaray v Juventus Champions League Group B clash.
The match was halted shortly after the half-hour mark, with the scoreline 0-0, as increasingly heavy snowfall made playing conditions nearly impossible.
The referee called the players off the pitch as efforts were made to clear the snow.
However after a 25-minute delay, UEFA announced the match had been abandoned.
A message on the official Twitter page of UEFA said: "The #UCL fixture between @GalatasaraySK & @juventusfc has been abandoned after a snow storm caused the pitch to become unplayable."
A message on the mico-blogging site by Juventus said: "#GalaJuve has been abandoned due to snow. We'll bring you news on the rescheduled fixture as soon as we have it."
Under competition regulations the remaining match time must either be played on Wednesday, or on another date set by UEFA. The match clock stopped at 31 minutes.
Juventus need a point from their final game in the group to secure their ticket to the last 16 knockout phase along with leaders Real Madrid.
Galatasaray require a win to beat Juventus to second place.
Olympiacos pip Benfica on head-to-head ruleBenfica were eliminated from this season's Champions League despite coming from behind to beatParis Saint-Germain 2-1 in Lisbon in their final game in Group C.
Edinson Cavani gave the visitors the lead at the Estadio da Luz only for Brazilian forward Lima to level from the penalty spot before half-time.
Nicolas Gaitan then scored what proved to be the winning goal for the Portuguese giants in the 58th minute, but the final outcome was academic as Olympiacos got the victory they required in the night's other Group C game.
The Greek side beat Anderlecht 3-1 in Greece and advance to the last 16 due to their superior head-to-head record against Benfica, twice winners of the European Cup in the 1960s.
Manchester City fought back from two goals down to earn a 3-2 win at Bayern Munich and break the holders' record ten-match Champions League winning streak.
The German giants also suffered their first defeat in major competition since coach Pep Guardiola took charge in June.
Bayern also fell to their first home defeat -- after 18 wins -- since losing 2-0 at home to Arsenal in last season's knock-out stages of the Champions League in March.
With both teams already through to the knock-out stages, City avenged October's 3-1 defeat to Bayern at the Etihad Stadium, but still finished second to the Germans in Group D with both teams on 15 points.
Super-sub Tomas Wagner scored a last-minute winner to fire Viktoria Plzen into the UEFA Europa League on the back of a shock 2-1 Champions League win over nine-man CSKA Moscow.
It had been a campaign to forget for Plzen, who were pointless heading into Tuesday night's Group D game, but they knew that victory would be enough to see them pip CSKA to third place on their head-to-head record.
The Czechs were determined to score in the first half but failed to make the breakthrough - an honour which fell to Moscow's Ahmed Musa shortly after the break.
The game then swung on Alan Dzagoev's dismissal for violent conduct and Daniel Kolar promptly equalised to put Plzen back on course towards taking a first point.
All three would stay at the Doosan Arena, though, with Wagner rifling in a late strike before Pontus Wernbloom compounded CSKA's misery by getting himself sent off.

Record-breaking Ronaldo helps Madrid end on a high

After Luka Modrić's fine opener ,Ronaldo added his ninth goal of the group stage to set a new competition best as Madrid recorded another victory.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his record ninth goal in this season's champions league group stage as Real Madrid CF finished unbeaten at the top of Group B, ending FC København's slim hopes of prolonging their European campaign.

LUIZ FELIPE SCOLARI REACTION

"It is good. England, Italy, Uruguay, that is the toughest group and we are not in this one! We open against a European team, which was my preference. We have the clasico, which will be very tough, in the middle. Then Cameroon. I think it's good for us"

WAYNE ROONEY REACTION

"If we want to be the best, we have to beat the best. Tough group but really looking forward to it! Roll on Brazil 2014!"

JOACHIM LOW REACTION

"So, we will be meeting old friends. It's already something special to have the USA in our group. Jurgen and I have had a very good and close relationship for a long time. We have always exchanged ideas on a regular basis, but that will certainly change before the World cup match "

DIDIER DESCHAMPS REACTION

"It could have been more complicated, let’s be honest. We’ll have our Swiss neighbours, one south american team and Honduras playing a similar style. We were worried about playing in the north because of the heat. Finally not, it’s better for the recuperation. People said Ukraine was a good draw and see what happened. But yes, it could have been harder. First game is against Honduras, it’s the most important one, winning it would put us in the best position. No opponent is easy, we need to be ambitious but reasonable. Before and after the draw our objective is the same: Round 16."

FABIO CAPELLO REACTION

"Our group is not as hard as others, like B and G for example. Each team is very different in our group. People might say Belgium is the favourite thanks to their good qualifiers, but we still hope to top the group.

"It’s a good group the draw is not so bad another really important thing is the location as we play in the centre of Brazil. I’m happy.

TP Mazembe (DR Congo) : CS Sfaxien (Tunisia)

Sfaxien club lost 2-1 in the final second leg on Saturday in Lubumbashi, but a 2-0 win from the first leg saw them cruise to the title 3-2 on aggregate.

The Tunisians survived several onslaughts from their hosts, who went up early through Cheibane Traore and Mbwana Samatta, before Sfaxien’s danger-man Fakhereddine Ben Youssef scored in the dying stages to hand his side their third title after 2007 and 2008.
